watched a tutorial for substance designer as i was struggling to make nice textures. i also decided to make a mood-board/ reference sheet just for the textures.

there was already a linen cloth texture in substance painter but not wood planks i could use for the hull

making wood planks texture in substance designer
started with tile generator and gradient to make it the planks look less even. i also added a bevel node.

then i used a overlay blend node to add the height map from a wood texture over it

to make the wood pattern less uniform i added a slope blur gray-scale node and used the perlin noise texture to warp some of the wood texture.

to make the nails in the wood planks i used another tile generator and plugged it into the metallic node

for the colour, i used a gradient map and linked it the the curvature of the normal node. i colour picked from my pure ref images.

for the roughness i used the curvature again but inverted it and adjusted the levels. i also swapped the object to a cylinder to better see how it would look on a curved surface.

to change the colour of the nails i added a blend node and plugged the tile generator with the nails into the opacity, then i put the new nail colour in the foreground and the old planks colour in the background.

made a paint texture over some planks. also used multiply and overlay layers to adjust the colour of the planks.

used the opacity channel to make tears in the ships sails.

made windows by using the square alpha brush to erase mask off the areas and then adjusting the height so it looks inset. i also added a pattern over it and made the lighter part emmissive.

used stripe texture with height to make interesting pattern on the ship and break up the wood planks texture

made rope wraps using the stripe pattern again with height and put a texture over it.

i made my own patterns and masks

tried using an image for the door but it looked too out of place so i used my own height map and converted it to a normal map.

put the pattern on the sail and i masked off some areas of it with a grunge map to make it look worn

experimented with different colours for the sails

went into photoshop to make the emissive and colour layers

used overlay layers to add colour variation. also added some moss

made some changes to the sail pattern and the windows

made some areas of the wood look wet by decreasing roughness and adding a grunge mask.

added carvings into the wood using height map
