Having put some of my textures together in unreal engine i have been able to reflect on the style i’m going and the overall colour scheme. i think i need to revisit some of the models and redo some textures over the Christmas break.

It was pointed out to me by Amil that my textures look off because of the specular texture. I fixed it by plugging in a constant node and setting the value.
I think the biggest issue is that my assets dont have enough detail modelled into them. so, i have decided to rework some of them and put others more in the distance to create shillouettes with the fog using the post processing volume. for example, i think the temples would be better to view at a distance towering over the mountain, acting to set the mood rather than as the focus. i have decided to make the focus on the huts at the bottom of the mountain and the dock. i would like to make the dock much bigger and tell more of a story. with the temples further away it should create a sense of distance and disconnect, but at the dock i want it to be well lit and warm.

here i have partitally remodelled the hut thinking more about how the tiles would overlap and paying more attention to the shape and shillouette im creating. this time im also planning on where i want the lighting to be, for example in the windows and the lanterns. i have tried more to tell stories through my modelling, for example breaking the top of part of the roof. it is a subtle detail but seems to add a lot of personality. i have also made the roof slightly slanted (i got this idea from one of my reference images) but incorperating these imperfections adds a lot of visual interest.

i have been aiming to include more detail and objects in these newer models, as well as thinking about the overall shapes and negative space im creating. for the boat, i decided to look up more references and look up how junk boat sails and ropes work to make something that first looks believeable before moving onto the details. i can also add transparency to the sales in substance painter to create holes and tears and more negative space to add more visual interest.

i have decided to incorperate the wing pattern as a texture on a more realsitic sail rather than having it take the exact shape of a wing. i can also add wing shapes into the smaller details to add interest and tell more of a story. for this boat i want to tell a story of it returning from a voyage with damage and tears in the sails, but it has been decorated and lit up by the people living there to celebrate its safe return.
